| Bextra – An NSAID that falls into the “COX-2 Inhibitory category.
COX-1 – short for Cyclooxygenase-1, which is an enzyme that shields delicate stomach tissue from harsh digestive acid
COX-2 – short for Cyclooxygenase-2, which is an enzyme found in inflamed and feverish tissues that causes pain and discomfort.
COX-2 Inhibitor – a drug that selectively blocks COX-2 and leaves COX-1 alone, thereby relieving inflammation without causing stomach irritation and bleeding
Erythema Multiforme – a mild skin allergy characterized by small, ring shaped rashes on the hands and arms and accompanied by flu-like symptoms.
Heart Attack – a cardiovascular event caused by either a blockage in an artery or death of heart tissue due to lack of oxygen
NSAID – a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammtory Drug, such as asipirn and ibuprofen, commonly used to reduce swelling and relieve mild to moderate pain.
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) – a potentially fatal allergic reaction that causes the mucus membranes under the skin to become inflamed and irritated, resulting in great pain and scarring.
Stroke – a “brain attack” that results from lack of oxygen to the brain caused by an arterial clog or a ruptured intracranial blood vessel. Strokes often cause brain damage, memory problems, and death.
Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TENS) – an extremely fatal skin disorder that causes the skin to flake off and shed in large sheets. It is considered a more advanced form of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.
